our search
Our search functionality allows for comprehensive searches across our documentation database.
More options have been made available for users wishing to leverage the power of advanced Boolean searching.
Available from the 'Search for' dropdown menu it allows the four most common logical operators, AND, OR, AND NOT
to be used within your search string.
Use the AND operator between two words to find documents that contain both terms. For example, type braking
AND trailers to identify documents that contain both braking and trailers. For simple AND searches, the
'All of the words' search option produces similar results.
Use the OR operator to search for all occurrences of any term. For example, type tire OR tyre to find all
documents with occurrences of either spelling. For simple OR searches, the 'Any of the words' option produces
similar results.
Use the AND NOT operator before a search term to exclude any documents that contain that term. For example,
type engine AND NOT diesel to find all documents that contain the word engine but do not contain the word diesel.
To search for a specific phrase please use quotation marks, for example type "compression ignition engines"
to find all documents that have the exact phrase compression ignition engines.Brackets can be used to demark part of a query, for example, type ("brake fluid" AND NOT "brake disk") AND pressure to
search for all documents containing the term brake fluid but exclude those containing brake disk then, from those results,
return those that also contain the word pressure. When using the boolean search option an operator must be specified for results to be returned successfully. The use of
wildcard characters, i.e. asterisks (*) or question marks (?), are not permitted and certain very common words will
not return any results if used, for example, "a", "I" or "you" are not available.
Any of the operators above can be used together to form complex queries, for example:
"tyre OR tire AND pressure"
Will return all documents containing the terms tyre pressure or tire pressure.
"Brake Horse Power" OR BHP AND NOT "brake fluid"
Will return all documents containing the terms Brake Horse Power or BHP but
will exclude those documents also containing the term brake fluid.
Please note, that InterRegs search results are 'page' based rather than 'document' based, i.e. the search query
is performed on each page separately and the results accumulated. A search for the phrase "compression ignition
thermodynamic cycle" will not return a hit if the phrase is spread across two pages of a document.
InterRegs.NET supports the use of wild card characters (* or ?), within the 'Search for' textbox:
- Searching using: *
The asterisk wildcard represents a group of letters that are unknown. For example searching for poly*lene will
find all instances of polyethylene, polybutylene or polypropylene.
- Searching using: ?
The question mark wildcard represents a single unknown letter. For example, searching
for t?re will find all instances of tyre or tire.
The Search Options allow you to change how the search engine deals with the words entered in the 'Search for'
text box:
- All of the words
Searches for documents that contain all of your search words, but not necessarily in the order you type them.
For example, if you type ignition engine, the results include instances of ignition engine and engine ignition.
Any of the words
- Any of the words
Searches for any instance of at least one of the word types. For example, if you type ignition engine, the
results include any instances in which one or both of the two words appear: ignition, engine, ignition
engine or engine ignition.
- The exact phrase
Searches for the entire string of characters, including spaces, in the order in which they appear in the
Search For box. For example, if you type exhaust emissions, the results list contains only instances of
exhaust emissions (both words, next to each other, and in that order).
